About Joey

Most people who come to see me are thoughtful, capable professionals, students, or business owners who feel stuck somewhere in their lives. They may be dealing with anxiety, relationship challenges, burnout, or uncertainty about their direction. Often, they’re doing well on paper but feel something in their life isn’t fully aligned.

My work focuses on helping clients gain clarity about their values, understand the patterns shaping their lives, and take practical steps toward building a healthier and more fulfilling life. I see therapy as a collaborative partnership aimed at helping you move forward with greater purpose, confidence, and direction. Many of my clients have tried therapy before but were looking for a more pragmatic, evidence-based, action-oriented approach.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent five years working in software sales and management. That experience shaped the way I approach counseling. I understand the pressures of demanding careers, leadership responsibilities, and the challenge of balancing professional success with personal fulfillment. Many clients appreciate working with someone who understands the realities of the professional world and can speak their language.

My approach to therapy is both thoughtful and practical. I draw from evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR, while also drawing inspiration from philosophical traditions that have wrestled with questions of meaning, purpose, and human flourishing for centuries. Although psychotherapy as a formal discipline emerged in the late-1800s with Dr. Freud, the ancient philosophers were often grappling with many of the same challenges we face today.

In our work together, we focus on:

• understanding the beliefs and patterns shaping your life

• clarifying your values and long-term goals

• strengthening relationships and communication

• developing practical strategies to reduce anxiety and stress

• taking concrete steps toward meaningful change

Many clients tell me they appreciate having a therapist who challenges them thoughtfully while also providing practical guidance. Therapy is serious work, but it doesn’t have to feel stiff or impersonal. My goal is to create an environment where clients feel comfortable thinking freely, exploring difficult questions, and developing the courage to make meaningful changes in their lives.

Education and Training

I received my Bachelor of Arts degrees in Government and History from the University of Texas at Austin and my Master of Arts in Counseling from St. Edward’s University. I have received advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy through the Beck Institute and in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy through the EMDR International Association.

My work also draws on elements of several complementary approaches, including solution-focused therapy, attachment-based perspectives, existential psychology, interpersonal and relational approaches, therapeutic lifestyle change, and the Gottman Method for couples.

I am committed to ongoing professional development and regularly pursue continuing education to stay current with research and best practices in psychotherapy.

Professional Background

Before becoming a counselor, I worked in the technology industry in software sales and management. This background gives me practical insight into professional environments, career development, leadership dynamics, and the challenges of navigating meaningful work.

I frequently draw on this experience when helping clients think through career transitions, professional burnout, and long-term life direction.
